Natural phenomenon: The space has a great aesthetic landscape value. The area is covered with vegetation of pubescent oak (Quercus pubescens Willd.) , hornbeam (Carpinus orientalis Mill.) and thermophilic laurel (Laurus nobilis L.). The source of the river Mirna around Buzet is composed of flysch and continues with a deep calcareous canyon till the Istrian spa where it forms picturesque cliffs.
This species were collected by the famous botanist Muzio Tommasini from Trieste already in the year 1843, but it is only in the 1880 Carlo Marchesetti recognized it and described as a new species and named after his botanical teacher. Moehringia tommasini is an endemic species that belongs to the area of the Eastern Alps and the northwestern Dinarides. Nowadays it is distributed in a very narrow border parts of Croatia (Istrian thermal resort), Slovenia (Osp, Crni Kal Predloka, Locke, Podpeč) and Italy (Val Rosandra). Ombrophone species – habitat are usually protected from direct rainfall. In Italy there is the class Asplenio-Moehringietum Tommasini. It is a rare and endangered endemic species, strictly protected at national and international level (Bern Convention, the Habitats Directive). Habitats of this species are parts of the Ecological Network and the future of the European network Natura 2000.
