The Diocletian Palace is located in Split and is an impressive architectural complex built by the Emperor Diocletian between 293 and 305. In 1979, the Diocletian Palace has been registered in the UNESCO list of World Heritage sites and monuments.
The Diocletian Palace has the appearance of a fortified villa destined to be the home of the emperor. The structure of the building is typical of Roman military camps formed by the cardo and the decumanus, 2 intersecting streets with several cross streets. Its walls are 18m high and 2m thick surrounded by square towers and gates (the Golden Gate, the Silver Gate, the Bronze Hate and the Iron Gate). Today the perystile is one of the best conserved. The Diocletian Palace and Medieval Split was built as a model of a castrum, with towers and walls of the peristyle in oriental style.
