UNESCO Tangible Heritage St. Jacob’s Cathedral in Šibenik

The St. Jacob's Cathedral in Šibenik is located in Šibenik and is the most important Renaissance monument of Croatia, whose construction began in 1431. The cathedral is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000.

The construction of the Cathedral of St. Jacob began in 1431 in the Gothic style, and in 1441 was entrusted to Giorgio Orsini who ampled the church with a nave, with a dome and with the portal with various sculptures. In 1475 the work was entrusted to Niccolo Giovanni Fiorentino that continuous the work in the Renaissance style and complete the dome with the sculptures of St. James and St. Mark’s. In 1505 after his death, the building was completed by Venetian craftsmen . The consecration of the cathedral happened in 1555. However, among the names in the construction of the Cathedral of St. James , we find Matejev Juraj Dalmatinac , a Gothic master under whose direction were built the transverse nave , presbytery , apse decorated with a band of 74 bas-reliefs in the Renaissance style . The Cathedral of St. Jacob consists only of stones coming from the Island of Korcula , Susak , Brac , Rab and Krk . Work of Juraj Dalmatinac is the baptistery of the cathedral with stone decorations and bow decorated with the figure of God and the angels.
